Generation Voice: Youth Media in Delaware

Students at Mount Pleasant High School are making news.

    Literally!

The students are part of Generation Voice, an exciting youth media initiative that gives high school students the chance to tell their own stories as they learn the techniques and technologies of radio and digital production platforms.

Students work with their Delaware Public Media youth radio producer to craft multi-media stories on topics that interest them most, from fashion and music to social movements and the environment.

Their work has been outstanding. Several features were named Producers Picks by Public Radio International (PRI), the kids recently won first place at the Delaware Press Association's High School Communicators Awards for their work, and one student's exceptional reflection on recent events in Baltimore was picked up by international news organization Deutsche Welle.

Check out student features on Generation Voice, a collaboration of Delaware Public Media and the Brandywine School District in Northern Delaware.

Hats off to MPHS junior Mikyhial Clarke for selling a news feature to an international broadcaster!

Mikyhial worked for weeks on a story about processing events in Baltimore as a young man of color. He interviewed youth activists and talked with his father about unlawful policing and finding a movement--peaceful protest--that represents him.

German broadcaster Deutsche Welle bought the piece to post on its news website, earning Mikyhial a check and an international byline! Listen to his story here.
