    Department Goals/Curriculum

    Social Studies focuses on four main themes: Civics, Economics, Geography, and History.  These are delivered in various ways throughout the middle school years. Each year builds upon the one before.  Reading and writing are an important part of the lessons and include language arts skills. 

     

    6th grade Social Studies will focus on the following themes: 

    • Building Global Mental Maps
    • Human Interaction with their Environment
    • Cultural Patterns
    • Reasons for Regions
    • Economic Systems

    7th grade Social Studies will focus on the following themes:

    • Partnerships and Partitions
    • Why Trade?
    • Expansion of Freedom
    • Property Rights
    • Economics: Supply and Demand

    8th grade Social Studies will focus on the following themes:

    • Thinking Like A Historian
    • Colonization and Settlement
    • Revolutionary America
    • The Early Republic
    • Economic and Social Change/Westward Expansion
    • Civil War and Reconstruction
