    7. Blend and Balance
    8. Phrasing

    Sight-Singing (Singing music at sight without help from the teacher)

    1. Recognition of clef
    2. Recognition of lines and spaces
    3. Incorporation of Solfeggio to sing pitch
    4. Incorporation of syllabic system to perform rhythms at sight

    Vocabulary

    1. Terminology to identify elements of the staff
    2. Terminology to identify expression markings
    3. Terminology to evaluate the performance of music

    Rehearsal Skills

    1. Routines that are conducive to the success of the choir
    2. Routines that are conducive to individual learning

    Performance Skills (appropriate protocol on and off the stage for choir members)

    The major skills objectives of this course are:

    1. Refining a singing posture that supports an age appropriate singing voice
    2. Refining control of all muscles involved in the production of our singing voice
    3. Refining listening skills that enhance blend and balance within the choir
    4. Perform advanced sight-singing while demonstrating accurate rhythmic and pitch awareness
    5. Employ a vocabulary that allows the student to communicate specific personal preferences and critics about music to others in a meaningful way
    6. Continue to develop musical independence

    1. The Rhythm Reader Levels 2– Audrey Snyder
    2. Vocalize! – Andy Beck
    3. Warm Ups & Work Outs Volumes 1 and 2 – Emily Crocker
    4. Masterworks Press Sight Reader for Unison Choirs
    5. Sing Legato– Kenneth Jennings
    6. Various videos and listening examples of singers and choirs

     

    Major activities in daily classroom instruction will consist of:

    Group Warm-up

    1. Physical stretch and warm-up
    2. Call and response tonal patterns
    3. Counting exercises
    4. Breathing exercises
    5. Vocal exercises

    Sight Singing

    1. Melodic reading
    2. Rhythmic reading

    Review of familiar literature

    Introduction of new material

     

    Grades will be calculated using the following system:

            

             Summative 70%

    • Written Tests
    • In School Performances
    • Evening Performances (December, January and May)
    • Individual Performance Assessment (audio recordings etc.)

             Formative 30%

    • Student Activity/Written Work
    • Quizzes
    • Weekly/Daily Performance Assessment

     

    Other important items specific to this course include performances.

     

    Evening concerts are a requirement of this class.  Three performances have been scheduled.  Your child should have them marked in her planner.
