Learning About Wilmington's Underground Railroad

Did you know that an enslaved man by the name of Henry “Box” Brown found his way to freedom by shipping himself in a crate from Richmond to Philadelphia??

In honor of Black History Month, 4th graders at Lombardy Elementary had the opportunity to explore his incredible journey and other inspiring stories through the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation’s educational program outreach, Five Ways to Freedom: Wilmington’s Underground Railroad.

This spring, our students will also visit the Kalmar Nyckel to experience hands-on learning about the Swedes’ role in colonizing Delaware.
