"Strong Fathers, Strong Futures" at Harlan

"Strong Fathers, Strong Futures" at Harlan

Harlan Elementary School hosted a landmark event, “Strong Fathers, Strong Futures,” specifically designed to honor and celebrate the fathers and father-figures within their school community. The evening was an intentional effort to foster positive male engagement and create a dedicated space where fathers feel seen, heard, valued, and connected to their children’s academic lives.

The event was the culmination of months of tireless work by Ms. Yahna Talley, the Family & Community Engagement Coordinator at Harlan Elementary. Ms. Talley, who has been passionately driving this initiative throughout the school year, noted the vital importance of this connection.

“Strong Fathers, Strong Futures came together out of my desire and passion to intentionally create a space where fathers and father figures feel welcomed, valued, and connected to their children's school,” Ms. Talley shared. “At Harlan Elementary, we recognize that when fathers are engaged in their children’s education, it strengthens not only student success but the entire school community. I wanted to bring fathers together for an evening that celebrated their presence, encouraged meaningful conversation, and reminded them of the powerful role they play in shaping their children’s lives”.

The evening’s program featured a powerful panel discussion with three fathers of current Harlan students, a moving poetry reading by the Twin Poets, and dinner. The centerpiece of the night was a keynote speech by Dr. Malik Muhammad, a renowned transformational leader, educator, and author of The Restorative Journey.

During his address, Dr. Muhammad shared a poignant reflection on the influence of fathers: “Three fundamental questions all children ask themselves when they're in elementary school: Am I capable? Do I matter? Am I love?... They don't have all the answers, they don't always come to the right answers, but they will come to an answer before they leave these halls. As fathers, our actions, our presence, and our words weave themselves into those answers, and our children take those answers with them for the rest of their lives.”

The impact of the evening was immediately felt by those in attendance, as many men took the opportunity to share their own journeys in fatherhood during an open mic session that closed out the event. Ms. Talley observed that “the response from the fathers in the room made it clear that creating spaces like these matters,” and she expressed being inspired by the men who showed up for their children and the school.

While the event was a celebration, it also served as a foundation for the future. Organizers emphasize that “Strong Fathers, Strong Futures” was more than just a single night; it represents the beginning of building a stronger culture of father engagement at Harlan Elementary.
