The International Baccalaureate Organization aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.  To this end the IBO works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.  These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.

    Program Overview

The idea of an International Baccalaureate was first conceived in the early 1960’s by a group of teachers in the International School of Geneva.  In conjunction with other international and national schools in New York, Copenhagen, Wales, Paris, Frankfurt, Tehran, and Montevideo, the founders of the IB were most concerned with the ever-increasing emphasis on education as the mere delivery of information.  They wanted to address the fragmentation of knowledge and the elimination of the aesthetic and creative experience that was occurring in many curricula.

The International Baccalaureate Office was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1965.   An experimental project was launched in 1967 and offered for use in 20 schools.  Today, the Programme is being taught in over 140 countries.

In 2004, Mount Pleasant High School became the first public school in Delaware authorized to teach the IB Diploma Programme. Mount Pleasant is now one of over 700 schools in North America and over 3,000 schools worldwide that are part of the International Baccalaureate Organization.

I.B. at Mount Pleasant High School

Mount Pleasant High School graduated the ninth class of International Baccalaureate students in June 2015. Seventy five students completed either the IB Diploma or Certificates Programme. Each class has received millions in scholarships and earned 6-30 credits or advanced placement status at a broad range of colleges and universities. The IB students have been accepted into some of the most prestigious universities in the country—Yale, Stanford, Middlebury, American, Cornell, UPENN, Morehouse, NYU, and Gettysburg to name a few.

Mount Pleasant, the only public school in Delaware to offer the IB Programme, has seen a steady increase in the number of students attracted to the rigorous academic program. From a first class of 25, over 300 students now participate in the Middle Years and Diploma Programmes at Mount Pleasant High School in the Brandywine School District.
