Forwood Elementary Absence NoteFor reference, a copy of the Attendence Policy is below (excerpt from the BSD Student Code of Conduct)
If you are between the ages of 5 and 16 years old, you must attend school every day. If you do not attend school during school hours while the teacher is teaching your class, this is considered an absence.
There are times when you will not be able to come to school. The reasons below are times when you will be excused or given permission to not attend school (excused absence).Your parent or guardian must write a note explaining why you were not in school if the absence is to be excused. You will need to bring the note to your teacher within 5 days. In order to go to the next grade you must be in school for a certain number of days. If you miss more than 26 days of school, you may not be promoted to the next grade level.
Reasons to Be Excused from School:
- If you are sick
- If you need to go to a doctor
- If you have a disease that could make other students sick
- If you have a death in your family or circle of friends
- If you are observing a religious holiday
- If you need to get treatments for an illness
- If your principal gives your parent or guardian permission to take you some place that will help you grow as a learner
- If you have an emergency and your parent or guardian has spoken to the principal about it
- If you are suspended from school
- If you have legal business
You will be allowed to make up all of the work, assignments, and tests that you missed while you were absent. You
will be given the same number of days that you were absent to make up the work, assignments, and tests. For example, if you were absent for 5 days, you will have 5 days to make everything up. Teachers can give you more time if they feel that you need it.
Students are responsible for asking for the work that they missed and for turning it in.
You can still get perfect attendance for the year if you miss school for observing religious holidays.
An unexcused absence is when you do not have permission to be absent from school. If you are not in school and the
reason is not on the excused absence list or your parent/guardian did not send in a note explaining why you were not in school, then your absence is unexcused.
What Happens If You Have an Unexcused Absence?
First Unexcused Absence:
Additional Unexcused Absences:
Referral to Visiting Teacher
Referral to the Courts
If you have an unexcused absence, you may get a failing grade for any assignments or tests that you missed while you were out.
You or your parent may ask for the assignments that you missed. You are given the same number of days that you were absent from school without an excuse to ask for the assignments. For example, if you were absent without an excuse for 5 days then you will have 5 days to ask your teachers for the missing assignments. Teachers can give you more time if they think you need it.
If you leave school because of an emergency, you must make up all of the work that you missed. Your parent or
guardian must write a note explaining why you had to leave school.
Lateness to Class
At the beginning of each marking period rules about lateness to class will be put in place. When a teacher sees that you have been late too many times he/she will tell an administrator.
Lateness to School
You are expected to arrive to school on time. If you arrive in your homeroom after the start of school you are late. You should sign in with the secretary if you are late. You should give her a written note to explain why you are late. If the principal decides that you have been late too many times then they will take the appropriate action.
Just because you have a note from a parent does not mean that your lateness is automatically excused. Car trouble,
personal business, heavy traffic, needed at home etc, are not reasons for an excused lateness. Examples of an excused lateness might be personal illness, medical or other physical or mental health care appointments and appearances in court. These will only be excused if you bring in a note from home.
If you are not in school for at least half the day you will be considered absent for the entire day.
