• Harlan’s Summer Reading Program

    Parents/Guardian & Students,

We have made great gains in reading over the school year and to keep those reading skills growing, all students that will be returning to Harlan in the fall are asked to read over the summer and earn 4 Accelerated Reader points.

There are 2 specific books each child needs to read (see the chart on the next page) for students entering grades 1 through 5.  These books were selected to give students background knowledge and to introduce vocabulary that will help them to be successful with Science and/or IB topics in the fall.  Students in these grades can earn the rest of their AR points by reading and taking quizzes on books of their choice.

The Harlan School Library will be open for students to read and take AR quizzes at the following times:

    ·        Wednesday, June 27th from 9:30-10:30am

    ·        Wednesday, July 11th from 9:30-10:30am

    ·        Wednesday, July 18th from 9:30-10:30am

    ·        Wednesday, July 25th from 9:30-10:30am

    ·        Tuesday, July 31st from 9:30-10:30am

There will be several copies of the required books available to read at the school library during the above summer library hours or you can look for the books at a public library.  If you choose to purchase the books, check out local book stores or you can try ordering them online at Amazon.com, BN.com or capstonepub.com.

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to come to the school library at the stated times to read books with their children.  This would be especially helpful for our younger students entering grades 1 & 2 (parents can help them take the AR quizzes to earn their points).

AR quizzes can only be taken on computers at school.  Students that are not able to make it to the school library to take AR quizzes over the summer may take the quizzes during the first two weeks when school starts again in the fall.

Earning the 4 AR points will be factored into the student’s 1st marking period reading grade.  Students earning all 4 AR points will receive an achievement certificate, recognition at the first awards assembly and other reading rewards.  The student at each grade level that earns the most AR points over the summer will receive a “Reading Star” trophy!
