From the PTA
We are happy to report that the 2nd Annual Dragon Dance-a-Thon & Silent Auction was a huge success! Hopefully everyone had as much fun as we did. We tweaked things from last year and overall it seemed to run much smoother and was more organized. We will continue to make adjustments until we get it perfect. As of 3/22, our total for this event was over $14,000!! We are still paying some bills and some money is still coming in so we’ll keep you posted. We could not be more thrilled with this success and just want to shout out an enormous thank you to all the families and MPE staff who pitched in with creating baskets for the auction, helping the PTA with set-up, running the event, and the clean-up. Every time we do something we are always blown away by the incredible generosity of this school community! You all make this job so much easier and we cannot express our gratitude enough.
Along that topic, since we did so well with the auction and were able to raise that much money, there will be no problem in paying for the installation of the walking path. The school district has approved the plans and is working on getting all the necessary permits so we hope to get started on this before the end of the school year. The walking path committee has been in touch with the DE Center for Horticulture and they are trying to see if trees can be donated. The plan is to do plantings along Philadelphia Pike in an effort to create a nice green screen for the fields and playground. If you want to get involved in this project, please contact Carolyn Bitzer at firstname.lastname@example.org and she can include you in the emails for planning meetings, updates, etc.
Our next PTA meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 6th at 6:30 pm. Emily Knearl, an MPE first grade parent, will give a talk on Parent Advocacy titled, "Politics in not entirely useless: How to lobby for your child and your school." Free childcare is available so please come on out and find out how we can help our school, especially in this tough economy that is forcing everyone to cut budgets and services.
The Scholastic Book Fair will run from Monday, April 11th thru Friday, April 15th. Contact Donna Jenkins at email@example.com if you are able to help out at any time during that week. In April we will also start gearing up for our Tile Fundraiser which will take place (the painting of the tiles) on Wednesday, April 20th. Look for a flyer to come home with more details on this event. May will start out fast and furious as soon as we come back from Spring Break. The first week of May is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please contact Peggy Clark at firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to help with this big thank you to all the wonderful teachers at MPE. The second week of May is Restaurant Week and Elizabeth Inman-Moran has been working hard to secure great locations for everyone to eat out at that week if you don’t feel like cooking! MPE will get a percentage of the total sales at each restaurant for the night. The month will wrap up with a Family Fun Day at the Wilmington Blue Rocks on Sunday, May 22nd at 1:35pm. There will be a pre-game parent-child catch on the field and post-game kids will be able to run the bases. Deb McGill is organizing this fun event for MPE! More info will be forthcoming on all of this.
On a final note, please continue to send in Box Tops, Labels for Education and used inkjet cartridges and cell phones. With our earned points at Labels for Education, the PTA was able to purchase new equipment for the playground during recess times. We purchased soccer balls, practice cones, basketballs, kickballs and jump ropes for the school. They make a difference so keep them coming!
Thanks for all of your support and hard work!
