Title I – Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged
Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA) supports programs in schools attended by significant numbers of children from low income families who, along with other students, may need this extra help to improve their performance. Title I provides financial assistance to local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools with high numbers or high percentages of children from low-income families to help ensure that all children meet challenging state academic standards.
All Title I buildings in Brandywine operate a Title I Schoolwide Program. The expanded opportunities for schoolwide programs are designed to assist schools, districts and States to raise the achievement of all children, but particularly those who have always been the intended beneficiaries of Title I--poor children, low-achieving children, migrant children, children who are neglected or at risk of dropping out, and limited-English-proficient children. By consolidating all funds within a school with many needs, comprehensive planning and reform, and more efficient use of a total sum of funding can more effectively raise the achievement of those who are farthest behind.
Title I requires parent participation, various parent notifications, and many opportunities for parents to serve on certain school teams within the school. This ensures parents a voice in the education of their children.
Mount Pleasant Elementary School is one of the seven Title I schools in the District. Mount Pleasant Elementary School receives an annual allocation based on the approval of the District’s Consolidated Grant Application. These funds currently support extra teaching staff, tutors, intervention materials, professional development and parent involvement funds.
