School Closings & Delays

Brandywine School District's first priority is to keep kids in school. However, in the case of extreme weather or bad road conditions, school may have to be closed or delayed. Here's how we let families know about school closings:

Watch our website
  • It's the first place we post changes.

Check social media

Receive a phone call.
  • All BSD families will receive a phone call, text, and email to provide updates on any delays or closings. This information is pulled from Infinite Campus. If you did not receive a phone call, text message, or email for a BSD delay or closure, please contact your child's school to make sure your contact information is correct.

January 29, 2026 & January 30, 2026

While we were hopeful of returning to classrooms this week, school will remain closed for two additional days, Thursday, January 29th, and Friday, January 30th, due to ongoing safety concerns with staff and student transportation to and from school. Although main roads and most secondary roads are cleared, right- and left-turn lanes, as well as single-lane roads without shoulder access, pose significant challenges for our drivers.  In addition, many neighborhood road conditions remain hazardous. Specifically, many of our bus stops are currently inaccessible, and the sidewalks for students walking to school are nonexistent due to snowplows piling up excess snow.  Naamans Road is an excellent example of this.

The safety of our student & staff drivers, bus riders, and walkers is a top priority. We cannot in good conscience ask our drivers to navigate neighborhood streets that remain unsafe for pedestrian and bus travel.

To ensure our students continue their academic progress, we will transition to asynchronous virtual instruction for the next two days. Teachers in grades 4-12 and S.I.T.E. will post assignments and learning materials on Schoology by 10 am each morning. Completed assignments must be submitted by the end of the day and will be used for daily student attendance. Students in grades Pre-K through 3 were sent home with work activity packets from their schools last Friday that are also available on the district website.

Even though the activities are designed for independent learning, your child will have access to staff during the following designated times:

*For grades PreK through 3rd grade, teachers will be available to provide support from 8:00 am to 11:30 am.
*Grades 4-12 and S.I.T.E. can access staff from 10:00 am to 11:30 am.

Teachers will communicate how to access their support via Schoology, Zoom, Teams, Dojo, or email.

We realize the inconvenience this causes many families, and we apologize for that.  We concur that in-person learning is second to none; however, we cannot risk our students' physical safety given the current conditions of our roads, bus stops, and sidewalks.
Lastly, all after-school activities are canceled for Thursday and Friday. Please feel free to reach out to your school or teachers with any questions.
Thank you for your trust, continued patience, and partnership as we work to keep our entire school community safe.
