IB Programme
The BSD International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is an choice curriculum for middle and high school students. This program is “a school within a school” offered at Talley Middle School and Mount Pleasant High School. Students in these programs take separate classes based on a model of learning that is recognized all over the world.
The idea of an International Baccalaureate first began in the early 1960’s by a group of teachers in the International School of Geneva. This group of teachers were most concerned that education was used as mere delivery of information and was not teaching kids to question and learn through creative thought. Other international and national schools in New York, Copenhagen, Wales, Paris, Frankfurt, Tehran, and Montevideo agreed.
The International Baccalaureate Office was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1965. An experimental project was launched in 1967 and offered for use in 20 schools. The IB encourages students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners. They understand that people with a different point of view can also be right. Today, the Programme is being taught in over 140 countries.
In 2004, Mount Pleasant High School became the first public school in Delaware authorized to teach the IB Diploma Programme. Talley Middle School followed soon after. Mount Pleasant and Talley join 700 schools in North America and more than 3,000 schools worldwide that are part of the International Baccalaureate Organization.
