English Language Learners
Students come to Brandywine School District from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds. We recognize that our diversity adds to a rich educational landscape. We understand that some of our students come to us with limited English language skills; they may be recent immigrants to the US or from families that speak another language at home. Further, they might be able to speak English fluently with their friends but don’t know how to communicate in English well enough to talk about academic subjects. BSD serves approximately English Language Learners who speak 53 different languages.

ELD Level 1: This introductory level focuses on basic English language instruction in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students engage in small group rotations, which allows teachers to provide personalized reading instruction and meet each student where they are in their reading development. This targeted approach helps build a strong foundation in listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
-
ELD Level 2: This level is designed for students with intermediate to advanced language skills. Instruction focuses on further developing their language proficiency, preparing them for more complex academic tasks.
Co-Teaching Instruction: In addition to ELD classes, students receive co-teaching instruction during their English Language Arts (ELA) classes. EL teachers work alongside classroom teachers to provide integrated language support, ensuring that students can access the curriculum and participate fully in classroom activities.
Our comprehensive elementary and secondary ELD programs are designed to provide students with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in their academic journey and beyond. We are committed to supporting their growth and celebrating their progress every step of the way.
